Digital Transformation in October 2026: Are You Building a Smarter Business?

Digital transformation is no longer about simply moving your business into the cloud, introducing new software or experimenting with AI.

After more than 30 years working with technology and business change, I’ve seen digital transformation evolve considerably. Today, the businesses getting the best results are not necessarily the ones with the biggest technology budgets. They are the ones that understand why they are changing and what they want that change to achieve.

And that is becoming increasingly important in October 2026.

Digital Transformation Is Becoming More Practical

AI continues to attract much of the attention, and for good reason. European businesses are increasingly using AI, cloud services and data analytics to improve the way they operate.

But technology adoption alone isn’t digital transformation.

The real question is: What problem are you trying to solve?

Perhaps your employees are spending too much time on repetitive administration. Your customer journey may involve too many manual steps. Or your existing systems may be making it difficult to access the information you need.

These are the opportunities where digital transformation can make a genuine difference.

SMEs Still Have Plenty of Opportunity

According to Eurostat, 71% of EU SMEs reached at least a basic level of digital intensity in 2025. That sounds encouraging, but it remains below the EU’s 2030 target of more than 90%.

AI adoption among SMEs was also only 19%, compared with 55% among large businesses.

For smaller businesses, this isn’t necessarily bad news. It means there is still a significant opportunity to improve efficiency, customer experience and competitiveness by choosing the right digital solutions.

You don’t need to transform everything at once.

Start with what matters most.

Don’t Forget Digital Security

There is another side to digital transformation that businesses sometimes overlook: cybersecurity.

The more connected your systems become, the more important it is to understand the risks. ENISA’s 2026 threat landscape confirms that cyber dependencies are increasing the attack surface for organisations, while ransomware remains one of the most impactful threats.

This means cybersecurity shouldn’t be something you consider after implementing your new technology.

It should be part of the transformation from the beginning.

What Should Your Next Step Be?

My advice is simple: don’t start by asking, “What technology should we buy?”

Start by asking:

  • Where are we losing time?
  • Where are customers experiencing unnecessary friction?
  • Which processes could be automated?
  • Are our systems secure and scalable?
  • Can our employees access the information they need?
  • How will we measure whether the investment has worked?

Once you understand these answers, the technology becomes much easier to choose.

At Digitus Consulting, we believe digital transformation should be practical, measurable and built around your business — not around the latest technology trend.

If you’re considering your next digital transformation project, let’s have a conversation about where you are today, where you want to go and how technology can help you get there.
